When my daughter was about 3 years old, she walked very quietly up to me, with a piece of cardboard in her hands like a tray. On it was a big wad of hair, her hair.
I looked up at her, and and saw that she had cut the hair off on one side of her head. She looked at me with the biggest eyes, and said "Mommy, I know you will be mad, but I really want short hair". After a short pause, I said "alright, but can we get someone at the beauty parlor to finish up the job" and off we went.

A number of years ago, I asked “Bryce, where are you and what are you doing?” while I was on the computer in the office. Bryce, who was next door in our bedroom answered “I am right here and I am breathing.”

My younger daughter was taking gymnastics and wanted to show me her new skills. I, however, wanted to read the paper. I attempted to keep up the positive reinforcement while reading the paper as she performed feat after feat until she finally said, "Daddy? Daddy did you see that?" to which I responded, "yes, good job!!" She stomped and announced, "Well I didn't do ANYTHING."
